Its 150 sq mi territory mainly consists of Saint Vincent, but also includes the northern two-thirds of the Grenadines, which are a chain of small islands stretching south from Saint Vincent to Grenada. To the north of St. Vincent lies St. Lucia and to the east Barbados. The country achieved independence from the British in 1979, and is now an independent sovereign state within the Commonwealth. St Vincent and the Grenadines rely chiefly on banana exports, although tourism is rapidly catching up. It is expected that the new international airport slated to open in early 2013 will cause the tourism industry to boom.
